Matt Holsapple Journal and Courier The Carroll County Sher iffs Department has lost one of its most loved and hairi est members Aris a bomb sniffing dog in the 9 unit died from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car shortly after coming off duty around 7:30 pm Wednesday The death leaves Carroll County with just one dog trained to sniff out drugs but none with bomb and explo sives training Canine officer Mark Back trainer had difficulty talking about the emotions he is feeling since the death of the dog which was essential ly his partner Because of the nature of his job Back often spent more time with Aris than he did with his own family Aris a 3 yearold German shepherd served many func tions with the de partment Besides being called in to sniff for explosives he would also use his sense of smell to look for suspects or missing people we would get a call at 2 am that an open door at a factory or a business he would go in first and sniff around and see if anyone was in Back said But his most important job Back said was looking for bombs The department still has two dogs that are trained to look for drugs but none that can sniff out ex plosives want to miss finding any
