Its first real function should be to do the same thing for the church that is done by the orchestra and the lighting effects in the theater and the create Noth ing can do so' much toward mak ing the message the sermon ef fective as the proper work of the choir in this respect and nothing can 4 do more to make it difficult for the preacher to reach the au dience than for the work of the choir to attwfoijftttention to it self either because of the enter tainment it furnishes or because of its poor quality irst of all the choir should contribute to an attitude of worship on the part of the congregation and add dig nity and solemnity to the serv ice Such psychological results cinnot be attained by poorly trained or 'insincere group of sing ers This primary function pre sunnoses necessarily patient and i Careful planning and earnest ef fort on the part of someone our the possible good results justify the expenditure of time and money A true appreciation of the place of formal music in the church service will bring with it a willingness to make the needed sacrifice in order to make this organization all it should be It should be one of the func tions of the choir to acquaint the congregation and the community with the best music of the church Popular music has been defined as music which is known famil iar music Doubtless this defi nition has Its limitations 'but it does at least contain some truth Certain it is that music with features cannot reach its goal if it Is never sung or play ed 1 unheard music has no chance to become popular The greatest musical geniuses of the world have contributed to the un surpassed treasures of the church It (is the privilege and duty of the' church to present this 'for public approval and affection And the beauty of it all is that this can be done while the proper at mosphere is being created and while the service is being made attractive The talent' Is not lacking for anything we really want to do It is merely hidden in napkins and in hearts and heads and voices Another opportunity which should not be overlooked in es timating the possibilities of the choir is that offered to local tal ent both for training and public appearance The singer can serve the church in a splendid way and at the same time derive personal benefit No public place offers better opportunities for talents to display themselves to a large sec tion of the community Why should not the church be the place where the community expects to hear the best music as well as the best Spoken message of the week and why should not the best talent be trained to look to the church as the best place to use that 3 4 1 'f' (Excerpt from a series of arti cles written by the late Prof Paul Tincher Smith) Daughters of Union Veterans will meet Tuesday afternoon at 2 at GA hall COLBURN eb Mrs Wagoner was hostess to the Col burn United Brethren Ladies: Aid society Thursday afternoon at her home Devotional were given fol lowed by a business session with Mrs Mary Runkle presiding?
