critically ill for several weeks the result of a stroke of paralysis He was 78 years old and was the first Lafayette man to receive a pension from the International Typographical Union to which he had belonged for 58 years TRAVELED WITH RILEY Born in this city July 27 1849 he grew to manhood here attend ing school and then learning the printing trade Before he took up this work however he was a painter Indianapolis and Greenfield he fell In with one James Riley an itine rant sign painter who was des tined to rise to immortal fame in later years as Hotmier poet" He and Mr Hoover traveled over the middle west for 'several months Riley lettering signs and his com panion filling in the background They were close friends up to the time of death PIONEER PRINTER Mr first work as a printer was on morning The book containing nearly 100 pages is a work of art and worthy of the dignified celebration Cecil Haupt centennial secretary was the chief compiler and Kin sell the artist The book con tains sketches of historical events and prominent figures in the coun ty's history as well as historical sketches of each township pho tographic reproductions add much The celebration presents a de cidedly The big monoplane of groaning under a tremendous load of gas roared along the beach at Glynn Isle and then skimmed gracefully into the air putting out to sea at a low altitude It disappeared uto the vast stretches of seas and mountains and jungles that bar the way to South America TA I more than 50 hours for a new non stop distance record above 4000 miles He hopes to land either at Rio de Janeiro
