the annual 500 mlle au tomobile race at the Ipdlanapolls Speedway here on May 30 Several times he could almost see his name bannered and shout ed from his hometown news cor ner stand and the other news cor ners of the world but fate has slapped him down as he was rid ing high wide and handsome to wards victory In 1929 he went Into the lead at 17 miles and gathered all of the extra prize money for fifty laps before he was forced out by motor trouble and the late Ray Keech won The famous six car jam caught him In 1980 when Billy Arnold won and he was rid ing well in second place with but 18 laps to go In 1932 when he smacked a wall before catching Louis Schneider who twas the vic tor RACED AT 16 so nicknamed by his high school mates because of his bulky and solemn appearance ran his first race at the age of 16 with a tin Lizzie that newspaper pennies bought He found no pot of gold at the end of his dusty dirt track rainbow and took up the more remunerative profession of railroad fireman Through the long nights and torrid days of heaving coal into a flaming firebox ho dreamed ofreturning to his first love auto mobile racing or not only liked speed but was speedy In high school he could run the 100 yards ten seconds flat and often performed at benefits for firemen He again massed enough money to return to racing and has been at it ever since supplementing its thrills occasionally with piloting his own plane Litz is the heaviest heavy foot er in racing He tips the pcales at 225 pounds and to balance the books this year will have the smallest riding mechanic at the track little Jimmy Albrecht who weighs but 87 pounds and Is a race driver aviator glider expert and outboard motor boat racer In his own right Kizer Halfbacks Shining oir Track football halfbacks ap bitious tacklers during the grid Iron season Providing he maintain the same form this week end Coach Orval Martin is hope ful of picking up some rather un expected points in the event Purvis of course has already established himself as a favorite in the javelin throw and is given an excellent chance to break the existing record of slightly over 207 feet Last fall Purvis threw the longest completed forward pass of the football season a 55 yard toss to Paul Moss and as a javelin heaver he is already credited with a mark slightly bet ter than 206 feet entire hopes of course are not concentrated on Schmeling is a copper riveted cinch to hand Max Baer the trimming of his life when they meet in Yankee Stadium June 8 Baer may be bigger and he may hit harder than he did two years ago but he still
