Near Goodland, a farm family made it to their basement just in time as a twister turned the house to rubble but injured no one, police said.

Numerous other farm buildings across the Midwest were damaged by the flurry of tornadoes Monday, but no injuries were reported. At least 24 twisters touched down in Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa, the National Weather Service said. A thunderstorm also spawned a tornado Monday afternoon which damaged seven houses near Tampa, the weather service said. Meanwhile, the Northeast today got a temporary respite from five days of op pressive heat in the mid and upper 90s from Virginia to New England. But forecasters said the mercury will climb back into that range Thursday.

In Baltimore on Monday, the mercury hit 100 degrees at 2 p.m., shattering a mark for the date that was set in 1911. Boston reached a record 98; New York City, Washington, D.C., and Richmond, hit 97; and Atlantic City and Newark, N.J., saw 96. The relentless heat added up to one big headache for utility companies and water departments which struggled to serve millions of consumers desperate for ways to keep cool. Little relief was on the way, forecasters said. "Temperatures in the Northeast should be in the upper 80s and lower 90s today," said Hugh Crowther of the National Severe Storms Forecast Center in Kansas City, Mo.

"But this doesn't appear to be a real cooling trend." In the Rockies, meanwhile, heat and tornadoes were only words in the news.
