Lafayette School Corp will undergo a limited criminal background check before starting work The policy was presented before the LSC school board Monday for a first reading Superintendent Ed Eiler said LSC has been conducting back ground checks on employees for the past five years' but now has to com ply with the changes made by the Indiana Legislature last year Those changes made such background checks a requirement for every In Stamp Club niano anhnnl vkja avxuu will put into policy what a practice is he said adding that there is one difference between what LSC currently practices and what the law requires Under current practice LSC con ducts background checks on em ployees after they have started work and not as the proposed pol icy requires before the employee is physically on the job LSC attorney Kent Moore said a limited check implies that although criminal incidents will be listed de tails of those incidents will not be provided in the record describe actual circum he said we have to ask do we have a sexual predator on our hands or someone at a bar who made inappropriate touching and was Eiler said the policy if approved will apply only to first time em ployees and not those changing jobs within the corporation It also only covers uncertified em ployees and not teachers because teachers already undergo a back ground check when applying for or renewing their teaching licenses he said Also Monday the school board: Voted to raise Superintendent salary of $88000 by 325 per cent retroactive from August 1997 Board member Rick Burger said the salary increase vote was delayed until after a contract had been negotiated LSC offered teach ers a similar increase in salary for the current school year and for 1998 99 The board approved a $20 in crease in education fees rently required to Eiler said states will lose their high way funding if not provided The program however is not state fund ed and is self The fee increase will cover salary increases and fringe benefits for in structors who teach the program to about 250 students during the summer only The board also was presented with a revised Internet policy for a first reading addresses some changes that ensure people who access the In ternet will use those sources ap propriately or face disciplinary ac Eiler said adding that inap propriate use would include look ing up Internet sites related to
