in depth in 1993 If Census data alone are exam ined wage gaps between whites and minorities are exaggerated and misleading More detailed in formation contained in the Na tional Survey of College Gradu ates tends to close those gaps shows that most factors are side the labor Black said Problems with definitions To begin with about 10 percent of the people who claimed in the Census to be college graduates did not even have degrees Only 43 percent of the women who claimed to have professional degrees actu ally had them tend to have jobs such as radiologist technician or phys ical Black said sound like professions so they claim to have a professional de Women are overrepresented in the health care field so errors in reporting can throw wage com parisons substantially between men and women Seventy one percent of the men who said they had professional de grees did have them Generally speaking the error rate on the Census was about 7 percent for white males 14 per cent for black males and 21 per cent for non black Hispanics also misleading to look sim ply at blacks whites Hispanics and Asians Whites and Asians are far more likely to major in fields that com mand higher pay such as engi neering business and economics Blacks are far more likely to ma jor in education and the humani ties which are fields that pay less Parents education matters Class also is thought to play a role in the 10 percent wage gap be tween blacks and whites Black said or research purposes he looked at the highest educational level of the least educated parent He found that when a black per least educated parent had finished high school there was about a 12 percent average wage difference with whites The differ ence dropped to 5 percent when the least educated parent had completed some college work Regional differences were found too or instance the wages paid to a child of Southern blacks was on average 13 percent below that of whites The child of Northern blacks earned only 5 percent less than whites That finding Black said is di rectly related to the economics of the South a generation ago In 1960 half of all college educated black men aged 30 40 in the South were teachers and often received low pay only 19 percent of their cohorts in the North taught school The 1960 Census shows that practically no blacks in the South were social workers lawyers physicians accountants or engi neers highly educated par ents matters a Black said in the South blacks given the same quality of education as in the North That shows in the distribution of He said he suspected that tle forms of cultural discrimina still cause wage differences or instance an Asian or Hispan ic who speaks with an accent or who stands apart socially could be passed over in the workplace es pecially if those factors affect his productivity Elif Taskiran a Purdue doctor al student in economics said she would like to see more research done on the wages paid to men and women doing the same work actors
