B2 Local Journal and Courier Tuesday October 12 2004 NWH1TE DertB Continued from Page B1 gathered in the North White Jr Sr High School Spoke out Against the consolidation Three or four spoke favor of consolidation Most of those opposed cited larg er class sizes longer bus rides and a lost sense of community as rea sons to avoid consolidation Ron Allen of Reynolds a former board member said much of the school decision is about money and maintaining the gen eral fund budget very confident the board can continue to manage it with out the closing of Buffalo and Allen said He said the Buffalo and Reynolds communities will be hurt by decreased property values and fewer housing starts Cindy Campbell of Reynolds said these small communities are built on a tripod of support: schools churches and businesses other two will not stand if one is she said long term viability of a communi ty is absolutely Campbell said the board need ed to show its patrons convinc ing that consolidation was the right route She asked the board for three items of proof that education will improve that the communities of Buffalo and Reynolds will not suffer and that property values in the two com munities will not decrease But Monon resident Rick Rus sell remembered several years ago when the school board voted to cut programs for the junior senior high school students including honors classes art classes athlet ics and teacher positions of this was done in an ef fort to sustain an inefficient school Russell said He said the decision to consolidate is a Board member Brian urrer said this was the hardest decision had to make He said he is in favor of small community schools But he said the decision to con solidate is far the most finan cially prudent thing to Consolidating will save between $275000 and $400000 a year urrer said He said the owners of a home with an assessed valu ation of $100000 would see a $54 annual increase in their tax bill after consolidation He said it would cost $2 million to do necessary upgrades at Reynolds and Buffalo including boilers a new roof air condition ing at each school and a comput er lab at Buffalo Board president Betsy Bossaer said that figure is equal to or more than it will cost to expand Monon based on current estimates next At future meetings the North White school board will have a public heating to get more infor mation about the cost of the Monon Elementary School ex pansion and a final vote on con solidation wHl betaken Dorothy Deane Kamp 82 Dorothy Deane Kamp 82 of 421 9th St died at 1: 15 am Mon day Oct 11 2004 in St Elizabeth
