finding their way around Woodland Elementary The blueprint for the build ing scheduled to open in fall 2008 is the same one used for Burnett Creek and Wea Ridge elementary schools more economical for said Gary Jenkins TSC director of buildings and grounds The school is in southeast Tippecanoe County on about 34 acres The exterior structural walls are finished Jenkins said and outside masonry is about 85 percent complete The roof is in place The goal is for workers to be able to move inside by winter and work on the interior of the building Before then perhaps in the next few weeks work will increasing scru tiny by federal regulators for auditing omissions income tax returns and its foreign op erations troubles that could threaten its stock trading privileges The company acknowl edged Thursday that it had received a US Securities and Exchange Commission sub poena for internal documents relating to operations in 32 other countries The US Department of Jus tice has requested the same documents the company said Sunshine has failed to file quarterly or annual fi nancial reports since 2005 and blames the resignation of au ditor KPMG for the omission KPMG has said it resigned because company executives failed to take its advice Sunshine said it resume filing the manda tory reports until its new audi tor Deloitte Touche com pletes a thorough review of its books going back years The IRS is auditing the income tax returns for 2002 through 2005 the company said Thursday Sunshine is a mul tilevel marketing firm with nearly 600000 independent sales distributors who sell en capsulated vitamins and herbs other food supplements and personal care products The company said in an un audited statement Thursday that it earned $37 million on $94 million in sales for in the first quarter reversing a $13 million loss for the same quar ter of 2006 ood labeling law gets more attention By MARY CLARE JALONICK The Associated Press WASHINGTON Shop pers are in the dark about where much of their food comes from despite a five year old law requiring meat and other products to carry labels with their country of origin That soon may change Re ports of tainted seafood from China have raised consumer awareness about the safety of imported food and many of the most powerful op ponents have left Congress political dynamic is such that just no get ting around said Colin Woodall director of legisla tive affairs for the National Beef Association The livestock group has op posed a mandatory labeling program The Agriculture Depart ment never put in place the labeling requirement because then majority Republicans repeatedly delayed it most recently to 2008 The leading oppo nents are grocery stores and large meatpacking companies many of whom mix US and Mexican beef along with oth er businesses involved in get ting products to supermarket shelves They say the tracking and the paperwork needed to comply with the law is too burdensome and would cause them to raise prices Those interests had influ ential allies on Capitol Hill mostly Texas Republicans President Bush a Texan who has strong ties to the cat tle industry never has liked the labeling law He reluc tantly embraced it as a part of the wide ranging farm bill in 2002 The labeling requirement popular with small indepen dent ranchers who sell their own products applies to cer tain cuts of beef lamb pork as well as to peanuts fruits and vegetables Processed foods are exempt So are res taurants and other food ser vice establishments The labeling program was not delayed for seafood House supporters of the labeling law are working to make sure it goes into effect next year Their job will be easier because several law makers mostly Texas Re publicans concerned about the livestock industry will not be around to block it had to kick and scream and fight to get this in the farm said Rep Denny Rehberg Mont He said supporters are con cerned that the Bush admin istration keeps dragging its feet TAINTED CONTINUED result prices of pork the staple meat have shot up 43 percent a jump so serious that Cabinet held an emergency session and Premier Wen Jiabao made public appear ances to address concerns: Cargill Van Luin and were given 45 days to correct the con tamination problems while the others were suspended from imports though China did not say for how long It was also unclear wheth er the bans covered only the products in question or all of the imports Beijing has taken steps in recent days to improve the image of its products It ex ecuted the former head of its drug regulation agency for taking bribes and banned toothpaste makers from us ing a chemical found in anti freeze Officials also have vowed to better integrate fractured regulatory system which splits responsibility among at least six agencies The official Xinhua News Agency quoted Li Yuan ping director of the Chinese import and export bureau as saying government has thoroughly investigated each case of substandard exports of them
